Some Help for Soldiers Calling Home

There is useful information in this post for soldiers and their families thanks to help from a reader of Fractals of Change.

Some but certainly not all of our troops in Iraq are able to bypass the outrageous rates which AT&T (which has a payphone monopoly in PXes) charges for calling home.  These soldiers are at bases which have morale centers equipped with DSN (Defense Switch Network) phones.  These phones can be used to make free calls to bases in the US which will often complete instate calls free or allow the use of cheap domestic calling cards for out-of-state bases.

Susan K. Burke who works as an operator at a military base in Massachusetts posted a comment which told soldiers what DSN number to call for call completion in that state - (312)478-5980.

Reader brianspringer asked in a comment what the DSN numbers for NY and Virginia.  Susan did some research and gave him lists for those two states which I’ve listed at the bottom of this post.

Susan has also provided a universal DSN number - DSN (312) 231-1311 – which any soldier with access to DSN phones can call in order to find the correct DSN numbers for bases in his or her home state.  She checked this number herself to make sure questions would be answered.  Thanks to Susan for continuing to help.
