Ads and Things #1

I am experimenting with different advertising models on Fractals of Change.  Google adSense so far has been pretty much a bust.  The ads they serve up through some mysterious algorithm are boring  - usually ads for some kind of extreme rant or another.  That may be Google’s robot’s comment on what I write but, regardless, you don’t click on these ads very often and clicks are what I get paid for.

Amazon ads – where I pick the books and where Amazon pays for purchases, not clicks – do better.  I hope you like what you bought on my recommendation.  Interestingly, often people click on my links to a specific book on Amazon and then buy something else.  Amazon still pays me in this case.  BTW, even this “success” is chump change: less than a dollar a day income for blogging; so, unless you can attract a bigger audience than the 5000 or so people I estimate read Fractals of Change or have a much better advertising model, don’t quit your day job to become a blogger.

If you are reading this post on my blogsite rather than in a feedreader or in email, you’ll see an icon in the right sidebar like this one:

for free magazines.  If you click on it in the sidebar or in this post, you get a chance to subscribe free to trade pubs in technology and other industries.  I added this icon last week to see what sort of income it generates and would be interested in your feedback on whether you find it useful.  I’ll find out from the sponsors whether it actually generates subscriptions.
