Daughter Katrina Morris is blogging about what she knows best – jewelry (or “jewellery” as they spell it in London where she works in exactly that department at Sotheby’s). Kate’s been making fine jewelry since she was about three as I remember it; one year all she wanted for her birthday was welding stuff. She’s an invaluable companion on a visit to the diamond district in NYC. On Jewels: An Appreciation of the Art is at onjewels.typepad.com. It’s a much prettier blog than this one.
The theme of On Jewels is appreciation of contemporary jewelry. Kate says that paintings aren’t valued for the paint and canvas that went into making them so jewelry which is art should be valued on its artistic merit rather than the cost of the stones and bullion it contains. Kate can tell whether jewelry is art or not and includes pictures of and links to many good examples. Her blog could be called Contemporary Jewelry 201.
If you’re a collector of jewelry, you certainly want to read On Jewels. Her Amazon books in the sidebar are properly esoteric and well-chosen. She also has a guide to galleries and jewelers on both sides of the Atlantic.
If you’re looking for hints on good gifts of jewelry, this is a good place to visit.
Kate, welcome to the blogosphere!
Antique Blogs – Learning to Learn is about when I first met Katy.
